My last post sent me scuttling to my OED to see if “befilth” is really a word. (Yeah, sometimes things get pretty crazy around here on a Saturday night.) It turns out it isn’t, but I’m giving it to myself as a Christmas present. But let me to point out that the BE- neighborhood of the OED is a playground. Take the above:
- I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t think of a more poetic word than BEEVES.
- My fondest hope is to be known as a BEEZER some day.
(You may be wondering why you can see the grain of the paper, and indeed individual paper atoms, in the above photo. My OED is the one where they sent individual pages through a shrink ray and crammed them all into one immense volume so you have to use either a magnifying glass or a macro lens with it. It adds to the fun, like you’re a detective on the case.)
